Where ever I go and about whatever challenge or topic I am speaking or being engaged and hired for as an academic advisor, aside all concepts and competences, it all boils done to one thing for being successful: the stringently be aware that we are dealing with human beings which means that any kind of change is creating uncertainty. But history has shown the change is the only constant in our lives and this is why - if we want to change something - we must in all what we do have in mind some golden rules on how we can enable and help all involved people to better deal with the change.

This is why I decided to put together this short article on how to unlock success across all topics with change management because in the end all concepts and competences fail when you fall short on bearing in mind and deploying the core principles of change management.

Walk the Talk

The first principle of effective change management is "walk the talk." It means leading by example, embodying the change you wish to see. When tackling any topic, be it personal or professional, it is vital to demonstrate the behaviors and values you expect from others. By aligning your words and actions, you establish trust and credibility, inspiring those around you to follow suit. Remember, authenticity is key to successful change.

The 20-60-20 Rule

The 20-60-20 rule recognizes that change efforts often encounter resistance from a portion of the stakeholders. According to this principle, 20% of individuals embrace change readily, 60% are open to change but need guidance, and the remaining 20% resist change altogether. By understanding this distribution, we can tailor our strategies accordingly. Focus on the early adopters, work closely with the persuadable majority, and address the concerns of the resistant group. With empathy and a strategic approach, you can transform skepticism into engagement.

The Triangle of Trust

Building trust is a cornerstone of successful change management. The triangle of trust consists of authenticity, empathy, and logic. This concept was developed by Frances Frei and Anne Morriss from Harvard Business School. Authenticity enables you to establish credibility by being genuine and transparent in your intentions. Empathy helps you understand the needs and concerns of others, fostering strong connections and building relationships. Logic ensures that decisions and actions are rational, backed by evidence and logical reasoning. By leveraging these three elements, you create an environment of trust, which is essential for driving change in any context.

First, Do Your Homework

Before embarking on any change initiative, it is crucial to do your homework. Conduct thorough research, gather insights, and understand the current state of affairs. By investing time and effort upfront, you set the stage for informed decision-making and effective planning. Small steps and incremental progress are key to building momentum. Celebrate quick wins along the way, communicating the positive outcomes to stakeholders. This approach not only showcases progress but also generates enthusiasm and support for the change effort.
